Staff Sergeant H. McMilne, Intelligence Corps. 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 39-45, all unnamed as issued. General Service Medal 1918-62, Geo VI, three clasps, Malaya, Near East, Cyprus, named to 2821216 Sergeant H. McMilne, Intelligence Corps. Queens Korea Medal, Dei Gratia, named to 2821216 Staff Sergeant A. Mc. G. Milne, Intelligence Corps. United Nations Medal for Korea, British issue. It appears the impresser has confused the Mc on the Korea Medal for an extra initial, instead of realising that is should read H.G. McMilne which is his correct name. The numbers are identical and these medals were issued to the same man. Worthy of further research. The Cyprus clasp on the GSM is loose on the ribbon. | WA/AM4 | Major F.G.E. Clements, Royal Tank Regiment, Force 136, SOE. A fine and very rare Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.) group awarded to a veteran of Dunkirk, who qualified as an Air Liaison Officer and Code Cypher, working with Force 136 in Burma and post war operations in South East Asia. 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 39-45, all unnamed as issued. General Service Medal 1918-62, Geo VI, clasp S.E. Asia 1945-46, named to Captain F.G.E. Clements, Royal Tanks. With the complete copy of his SOE Service Records, and Army Records for his wartime service, including photos of the recipient photocopied from the records. These service records are not technically available to members of the public, and provide a fascinating insight into what these small and covert units were up to. Frank Glyn Edwards Clement was born in Aldershot on 17th April 1918. He lived at Spehans, Manor Road, Aldershot. He was educated at Farnham Grammar 1931-34, Berkhamsted School 1934-37, followed by his attendance at the Army College. He married Jacqueline Phyllis Bennett-Snell, who had been born in Cairo on 31st January 1919. Clement was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment, Special Reserve as a 2nd Lieutenant, serving with them from 1937-38, when he transferred into the Royal Tank Corps Special Reserve. In June 1939 he was granted his regular commission into the Royal Tank Regiment, being posted to the 4th Battalion, R.T.R. With the declaration of war in September 1939, Clement was posted to Headquarters 1st Army Tank Brigade. Clements remained in the UK during the Phoney War, however with the German advance into France & Belgium, he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force serving in France from May-June 1940, where he served as Technical Officer & Liason Officer to the 1st Army Tank Brigade. In June 1940 Clement was evacuated from Dunkirk. In May 1941 Clement was posted to the 8th Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment, however he was shortly admitted to hospital, and was Y listed for a period, during his recuperation being sent to 55th Training Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps, where he has acted as Assistant Technical Adjutant and for a period he was attached to HQ Army Air Support Control where he carried out experiments with G1 Air GHQ in ground to air recognition. From 1942-43 Clement worked as a Captain GSOIII at HQ 11 Armoured Division, as Aerial Intelligence Liaison Officer. At this stage it appears that Clement was tending towards the more specialist branch of the service, and in Mid 1943 he passed the MI9 Intelligence course. At this stage of the war he was working at the Mo1 SP War Office. In February 1944 he was on a tour of duty round all section of this so called Office, this period covers the stage that he was being trained by the Special Operations Executive. By March 1944 he was on his way to India, by Plane, being posted to Delhi, having been selected to join Force 136 (SOE No.18115), the Far East Section of the SOE. During this period he is shown as having carried out many duties, but mostly S.D. on 7th May 1944 he joined Group B – Intelligence being made a Gill (Intelligence) in charge of HQ Intelligence Section, where he liaised with the Navy, Army, Air Force, the United States version of SOE-OSS (Office of Strategic Services), along with other smaller covert organisations whose abbreviations have not been deciphered – RNN, I.S.L.D. etc… From 13th July 1945, he was allotted as part of Group A G(Ops) for Operational Service in Burma, as an Air Liaison Officer, being posted to Tessore, Ceylon on 21st July 1945. Though the exact role has not been detailed in his service records, presumably he was organised supplies, aerial bombardments, and strafing for and on behalf of the SOE operatives, behind the Japanese lines. Clement was also a qualified Code Cypher, having been taught Innocent letter based on Playfair, Double Transposition, and Letter One-Time Pad, followed by Conventions Fixed for Innocent Letter & Secret Censorship. It states in his service records that Clement has ‘volunteered for any service overseas, posted to S.O.E. Would like to serve with SOE after war in the East has finished’. Presumably Clement had been itching to see Operational Service, his previous role, with the exception of a month spent in the retreat to Dunkirk, he had remained in the UK for the majority of the war missing out on the Armoured Battles in North Africa and Italy. Though Clements is described as being a good organizer, by his various SOE seniors, some of his confidential reports are not so positive, and one of his earliest SOE reports state that ‘He is cheerful and on the whole well-meaning. He has a good sense of humour, but little ability at serious conversation. He appears to have difficulty in applying himself to anything for very long. He is a little tactless in some of his statements, though this is entirely due to a lack of thought on his part rather than to any harsh trait in his character.’ Another report states that ‘He shows great keenness and appears to be making a great effort to give of his best. In this he is unfortunately hindered by his inherent untidiness, but this is beginning to show signs of improvement.’ It appears that Clement was viewed with mixed feelings by his superiors. Indeed on his recommendation for departure in India for Outpost work from SOE HQ, his SOE reviewer made a particularly cutting comment on him ‘This officers personal file discloses a long history of anxiety neurosis and I consider we shall not be greatly impoverished by his outposting.’ Clement remained with SOE after the end of the war, and worked with this organisation on para-military operations during the clearing up in South East Asia from 1945-46. His campaign medal is named to him with the Royal Tanks, this was standard, named medals to SOE operatives being unit denoted to the recipients parent regiment. The only technical post war service SOE saw was in the South East Asia campaign, hence officially named medals to members of this force are very rare. The SOE saw covert work in Siam and French Indo-China, operations in Burma & Malaya being deemed unnecessary, but a number of personnel remained in these countries as stated in the SOE record of service ‘liquidating guerrilla forces and giving assistance and advice locally’. At the time, with the Japanese defeat, a number of often politically motivated small organisations sprang up, taking full advantage of the post Japanese occupation chaos. To keep the peace, and prepare for the future the SOE were kept busy rounding up and disposing of any potential threats. The Communist uprising in Malaya in 1947 can be seen as an example of the failure to fully neutralize these opponents, resulting in a hit and run war that lasted almost another 15 years. In 1946-47 Clement left the Special Operations Executive on the organisation ceasing to exist, and does not appear to have remained in the Army. He died on 16th February 1986 at 26 Waverley Lane, Farnham, he is shown as Major, Royal Tank Regiment, retired on his death certificate.
